The Land of Morning Calm
Korea, always fascinating for its history and technological advances. Come and discover the magical world of the third country of Confucian civilization!
” When whales fight, shrimps havebroken backs“. This Korean proverb describes Korea’s geopolitical situation over the centuries: when China and Japan fight, Korea’s back is broken. Nevertheless, the small mountainous peninsula has preserved its cultural identity, different from those of China and Japan. It has become one of the world’s largest and most innovative economies.
In Korea, tradition and modernity live in perfect symbiosis. This is especially evident in architecture and design, where the use of hanji (한지), the traditional Korean paper, matches the search for new forms. Would you like to tread on a warm surface? Findondol (온돌), the traditional underfloor heating system, characterized by its harmony between functionality and aesthetics. Known since the Iron Age, it still works today and provides heat for several thousand homes every day.
Hangeul
Despite the notoriety of Chinese characters throughout the Confucian region, the Koreans created their own writing system called hangeul (한글). In the 15th century, a group of intellectuals led by King Sejong introduced the alphabet, “a great novelty” compared with sinograms. Hangeul is a very logical script and, contrary to what you might think, easy to learn. It is said that for intelligent people, it only takes three hours to learn how to write it. Otherwise… it takes three days!
